Chickens Galore
Chickens were first domesticated over 7,000 years ago from the wild Red Junglefowl, native to parts of Southeast Asia. Early communities valued them not only for their eggs and meat, but also for their feathers and even their role in cultural traditions. From Asia, domesticated chickens spread along trade routes into India, the Middle East, Africa, and eventually Europe.

The Roman Empire played a significant role in distributing chickens across Europe, recognising their value as a reliable food source. Today, chickens are one of the most widespread and important domesticated animals in the world, found on farms and in back gardens across the globe — including here at Bread Kitchen.
At Bread Kitchen, our chickens are more than just feathered residents — they’re valued members of our farm family. Friendly, curious, and full of personality, these birds bring energy and life to our pastures every day.
🌿 Who Are They?
Our chickens come in a variety of breeds, each with its own unique traits. Some are excellent layers, gifting us fresh eggs throughout the year. Others are prized for their calm temperaments and inquisitive nature, delighting visitors of all ages.
🥚 Life on the Farm
Chickens are natural foragers. When they’re not scratching in the grass for insects, seeds, and greens, they’re enjoying supplemented feed that keeps them healthy and happy. Their days are filled with exploration, pecking, and sunshine — and you’ll often spot them taking a dust bath to keep their feathers clean and parasites at bay.
❤️ Why We Love Them
These remarkable birds offer so much more than sustenance:
Fresh eggs — rich in flavor and nutrients
Pest control — they help manage insects in the garden
Soil enrichment — their scratching and natural fertilizer benefit our land
Charismatic personalities — each chicken has its own quirks and charm
Whether a curious chick or a proud hen, our chickens are integral to the rhythms of farm life at Bread Kitchen.
